Defensive Driving FAQs

Q: Is your driving safety class state approved?
A: Yes, our classes are approved by the Texas Education Agency to dismiss traffic tickets, to give insurance discounts, and to serve as a preparatory course for individuals desiring a limo/taxi license.

Q: What does this class cost?
A: If you are taking the class for insurance purposes or need an insurance certificate, the tuition is $25. For a ticket dismissal or state-issued certificate, the fee is $30.

Q: How quickly will I get my certificate?
A: An insurance certificate may be issued at the end of the class. The state-issued certificate must be mailed by law and generally takes about 5-10 business days (up to 2 weeks) to receive in the mail.

Q: What do I need to bring to class?
A: You need payment, your driver license, and a pen. If you are taking the class for a ticket dismissal, you must also bring the court paperwork or ticket.

Q: Do you need to see my driving record?
A: No, that is strictly for court purposes.

Q: I got a ticket and the officer told me I can take this class. Do I need permission from the court?
A: We recommend that you follow the instructions on your ticket and/or contact the court to make sure you qualify for a driving safety course BEFORE attending a class with us.

Q: Do you offer your class online?
A: No, at this time, all of our classes are held at Sears Stores or at individual Sears Driving School locations.

Q: I have an affidavit that needs to be signed by a notary. Are your instructors notaries?
A: Our instructors are not notaries. You will need to take your affidavit to a Notary Public.

Q: How long is the class?
A: Our driving safety course is a one-day, 6-hour program with a 45-minute lunch break and two shorter breaks.

Q: Do you provide a meal?
A: No, we do not provide a meal with our course.

Q: Can I bring my children to the class?
A: No, we do not allow children in our classes.

Q: I took the class this year for an insurance discount but just got a ticket. Can I take the class to get my ticket dismissed?
A: Yes. You are allowed to take the class once every 3 years for insurance purposes and once a year for a ticket dismissal.
