Adult Driver Education FAQs

Q: Do I have to take the 6-hour class?
A: The class is required if you are between the ages of 18 and 24. If you are younger, you will be required to take the teen course. If you are older, the class is optional and can be a valuable tool in preparing for the written exam.

Q: What do I get as proof that I took the class?
A: You will receive a certificate at the end of the class that needs to be submitted to the DPS office to obtain your learner permit.

Q: Does the class give me my license?
A: No, the class is the first step in the process of getting your license. You will need to take the class and then submit paperwork to the DPS to get your permit.

Q: Do you offer the class during the week?
A: No, we only offer classes on scheduled Saturdays.

Q: Do I have to stay the whole 6 hours?
A: Yes, you have to be there for the entire class to get credit.

Q: Is it all on one day or spread out?
A: The class is a one-day session.

Q: Is there any driving involved?
A: No, this is classroom only. We do offer in-car lessons with an instructor once you have completed the class and obtained the permit.

Q: What happens if I don't pass my test?
A: You will still get credit for the course, but you'll have to retest at the DPS office.

Q: Do we get a lunch break?
A: Yes, you get a 45 minute break for lunch and a few shorter breaks in between.

In-Car Private Lessons

Q: How much are the lessons?
A: In-car lessons are generally set up in 2-hour appointments that are $96 for each session. In some areas, we require a 3-hour appointment due to an extended distance. The 3-hour lessons are $144.

Q: When do I pay?
A: You will pay the instructor at the time of your appointment. We do not take pre-payments for in-car lessons.

Q: What forms of payment do you accept?
A: We accept cash, check, all major credit cards, and the Sears card.

Q: Do you offer a package?
A: We do not. We offer individual lessons so that each person can schedule only what they need and are not locked into more lessons than necessary.

Q: How many lessons do most people take?
A: Most new drivers take three to five lessons to prepare for the road test at the DPS. The instructor will make a recommendation based on your abilities after the first appointment.

Q: Can I use your car for the test at the DPS?
A: We offer our vehicle for the road test ONLY if the instructor approves the student for the test. If the instructor does not feel you are ready, we will not book a road test.

Q: How much does using your car for the road test at the DPS cost?
A: The fee for using our car for the road test at the DPS is $144. This does not include any DPS fees for the license itself.

Q: Does the instructor pick me up?
A: In most cases, we are able to pick up and drop off the student from their residence. If they live out of our pick-up range we can make arrangements to meet at one of our nearby mall locations.

Q: Can I have someone else with me during the lesson?
A: No. We do not allow any other passengers in the vehicle during the lesson.

Q: Can I take these lessons if I'm pregnant?
A: We cannot allow a pregnant woman to take part in the driving portion of this course for the safety and well-being of herself, the unborn child, and others.

Q: I need a vehicle with steering/pedal modification. Do you have this?
A: Our instructors are not trained in modified vehicles nor do we have the equipment to modify the vehicles.

Q: Can I choose whether I have a male or female instructor?
A: In most cases, we have one experienced instructor that handles our in-car lessons for each area, which does not make gender selection an option.

Q: I have a license, but it's been a while since I have driven. Do you offer refresher lessons?
A: Yes, our lessons are one-on-one so the instructor can assist you with your individual needs.

Q: Do I need to provide my own insurance?
A: No, while you drive with us you are fully covered by our insurance.

Q: Do you drive students with an international driver license or an out-of-state license?
A: No, we only offer lessons to students that have passed the written exam here and obtained a Texas learner permit or driver license.

Q: Are you able to perform the road test for me in place of taking the test at the DPS?
A: No, this is not a service that we offer.

Q: Can I cancel an appointment after I've already scheduled?
A: Yes, you may cancel your lesson, but we ask that you provide us with at least 24-hour notice. If you cancel more than twice with less than 24-hour notice, we will not be able to re-schedule your lesson.
